You say that everone is equal, except they aren't. People who go for fleets have a bigger advatage then people who go for defense. Also don't forget that you could have the best defesnes in the game and still get pirated and your defenses won't do squat.

Also if you think about it... if a planet has low resources but high defense then it doesn't make sense, logically, to attack it.
In fact, if you have 5 mln resources, and turrets for 100 000 points, everyone will want to pirate you.Another issue - you have 100k resources and turrets for 20k points.Someone simulate the battle with the calculator and fixes that if he crashes your defence 5 times, there will be 10 mln debris field and he'll have losses for 7k points, so he has 3 mln profit. And he will attack your for this profit. And for battle points.

Actually I think if defenses left no debris, then there would be the following sort of gameplay setup:

1) Pirates would be more inclined to attack players with a strong defense who farm
2) Fleet players would be less inclined to attack farmers and more inclined to attack pirates, since pirates would spend more resources on their fleet (which is probably being fleet saved, if not then recyclers can do a bunch), and less inclined to attack farmers who would be probably kill off more of their ships.

Right now, defenders have no recourse against either and by defending are more likely to instigate attacks by fleet players than a farmer who sets up no defense probably. That's the logical problem that I see.

Would recyclers be useless? Not at all. First, I would suggest upping the percentage of debris left by destroyed ships. This would make the point of recyclers primarily to recover your losses from attacking. If you lost say 30% of your fleet, then maybe you can use a fleet of recyclers to reduce the percentage of your loss to only say 15%. That's a big benefit for fleet players.

The other suggestion for defense is to make defense structures upgradable in the same way that ships are.

As for farming, it's really impossible to get resources just by farming. After a certain point, building and research costs increase exponentially faster than the income for each factory upgrade. Pretty much everyone has to have a fleet. I don't imagine there are many top 10% or so players who get most of their income from farms. The only people who farm are people who are just starting to play the game and trying to develop their planets. For these people, not having defenses which are strong enough to challenge early fleets makes the game extremely difficult for them (many dont even know how to fleet save probably) and as a result lowers game player retention.
