Assign them to your mines immediately for the added benefit of mine production. They still give you construction bonus in the mines.
Also as you get further along, robots are usually most beneficial in your metal mine.
I am Terteth race and try to get my metal mines as high as possible and assign 10 robots to metal for max production.
Once you get your trade center maxed out to level 7, you can convert resources with the existing exchange rates.
