I think i got you. When you build something the enery needed that is shown is the TOTAL (so for all the upgrades put together).

You wouldn't be able to build/upgrade if you did not have sufficient energy

click on the picture of the mine. Than you get a list with all levels, the mining per level and energy needed for each level. The difference from lvl 8 to lvl 9 eg. must be less than your energy balance - then you can upgrade.

But now another question. Lets say my homeworld is pretty good developed and i don´t want to buy new fields. Therefore I build satelitts, smash all solar planets on the surface and build other buildings instead. Then I have finally down it. All mines are at lvl 30, all other buildings are there and then some very dear friend comes by, eats cookies, drinks tea and destroys all my fleet including the satelits. Will my buildings then still function with 0 energy produced or is everything on hold ?
