The higher the espionage level - the lower the chance of failure/detection.

And some randomness as well. Points and other researches do not affect the chances in any way. Espionage level is the one that trully makes the difference.

There was a pretty old experiment with over 100 spy flights that showed that the fleet matters as well. The only significant and really noticeable change in the chance, though, is when you level up your espionage. There is always randomness with the spy reports. Sometimes I get five full reports in a row for five different players, on the other day I have to send 20 to get fulls for all of them.

also if you fleet up, up to 4 - 6 spyprobes you get the added chance of turret detection

what about ressearching in lasers? I got told, it would also effect espionage.

you were lied to about the lasers... you only need high espionage level and luck :) . by the way there are something like black wholes in the universe ... I had this case in Uni2... the player is with 900 points I have 2200 my level of espionage is 7 i strongly doubt he has more than 6... anyway I checked with an attack if he has equal level espionage with mine (he was a general) and no sms was sent. Well I broke 20 spyprobes on his planet and never got a full report. I guess there is something with the exact coordinates in the galaxy... or something, also it is not an isolated case so if you run on to a "probe-eater" pass or ask a friend to spy on him :p140:
