Have resources=>Build Mines/Powe plants to power them=>Have more resources=> Have more mines
OR:
Have resources=>Build ships=> Farm some guys=> Have more resources=> Have more ships

2 A colony ship is the answer. You can see the requrements for it in the "technics" screen=>ships

About the farming tactic- it is more interesting, but you have to be on your toes later in the game cuz losing your fleet means certain death (metaphorically, you can't die in this game)
The mining tactic, on the other hand, is much more secure, but less fun. You can build defences and mines and get pretty high up there, playing for like an hour a day. You can build ships and mines and play for 19 hours a day.

The choice is yours

If you mine, build your next colony near your main planet. This way you will transport your resources at a faster pace, helping your economy flourish.
