Question about Factory Upgrades

Just curious about if a factory upgrade completes for a particular ship while it is in flight already to a target (for example if upgrading guardian from level 1 to level 2), for that specific battle is the ship considered level 1 or 2 when it reaches the target......when sent to attack it was level 1 but by the time it gets there the upgrade to level 2 has completed.
So does the upgrade take effect immediately or not? Thanks
And also if researches take effect immediately also...

Absolutely, they both (the upgrades and other ship-improving researches) take effect immediately, so you can upgrade them while flying around ...
About the speed researches - they do NOT take effect unless a flight is launched after ending of construction. So don't expect the fleet to come back faster after a hit !
