Since you can recycle any resource in the galaxy (there is no point barrier), it is vital to send rec ships with your fleet. This way even if you lose many ships you will profit from the recycled resources. Send your recycles so that they arrive soon after your fleet, like 1 minute or so. This way no one from another planet (except the defender) will be able to take your resources.
