You have misunderstood. The improvements in the Factory will affect the ship's STRUCTURE (the life of the ship).
So... One Death star has 10 000 000 structure. 17*5%=85% from the shield research. So u calculate this percentages on the structure : 85% from 10 000 000 is 8 500 000. So the Death star ...
